Cyril M. Kornbluth was born in New York City on 2 July 1923, of Polish Jewish descent — the son of a First World War veteran and the grandson of a Jewish immigrant tailor from Galicia — and died at thirty-four in Levittown, New York, on 21 March 1958. A member of the Futurians, he wrote with Frederik Pohl The Space Merchants (1953), a satire of a world run by advertising agencies that is still read as one of science fiction's sharpest social novels, and alone the much-anthologised story The Marching Morons. His story The Meeting shared the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1973, fifteen years after his death.
