Joan Birman

Joan Birman is an American mathematician known for foundational contributions to low-dimensional topology, especially braid groups, mapping class groups and knot theory, whose book 'Braids, Links, and Mapping Class Groups' became a standard reference. She came to research mathematics later in life and became one of the most influential topologists of her generation. Birman was born to a Jewish family in New York City, the daughter of immigrants.
