Jerry Siegel was an American comic book writer who, along with artist Joe Shuster, created Superman, the first modern superhero.
Jerry Siegel, the son of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants, co-created Superman with artist Joe Shuster while both were teenagers in Cleveland; the character debuted in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Superman launched the superhero genre and became one of the most recognizable fictional figures worldwide. Siegel and Shuster's long fight for creator recognition later helped reshape comic-industry rights.
