Jacques Lazarus is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Officer of the Armee Juive expelled from the French military academy by Vichy's racial laws, who trained its maquis and escaped from the last deportation train.
Jacques Lazarus came from an Alsatian Jewish family that had left Alsace rather than become German in 1871. He was training as an officer at the war school in Strasbourg when Vichy's racial laws expelled him. He joined the Resistance in February 1943 — precisely, the Armée Juive, which became the Organisation juive de combat — teaching soldiering to the young around Grenoble and inspecting the movement's maquis in the Tarn as 'Capitaine Jacquel'.
Betrayed by an Abwehr agent, he was arrested by the Gestapo of the rue de la Pompe and deported from Drancy on 17 August 1944 in the very last convoy; twenty-seven prisoners, Lazarus among them, jumped from the train and got away. He went on to lead the World Jewish Congress in North Africa and to found the paper Information juive.
