Biography

J. Michael Kosterlitz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter

How & why

Michael Kosterlitz was born in Aberdeen to German Jewish émigrés — his father was the biochemist Hans Walter Kosterlitz, who had fled Germany in 1934. With David Thouless he showed in the 1970s that two-dimensional systems can undergo a phase transition driven by the pairing of vortices, the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition; the work opened the field of topological states of matter and brought them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2016.
