Irvine Robbins was born in 1917 in Winnipeg to a Jewish family — the name had been Rabinovich — and learned the trade in his father's Tacoma dairy store. After the war he opened the Snowbird in Glendale, California; in 1945 he and his brother-in-law Burt Baskin joined forces, and by 1953 the chain carried both names. Their idea was abundance made friendly: thirty-one flavors, one for every day of the month, with pink tasting spoons so nobody had to choose blind. Baskin-Robbins grew into the largest ice-cream chain in the world, and Robbins led it until 1978.
