David Marx

David Marx was the brother of Louis Marx, and the two of them incorporated Louis Marx and Company in 1919. Their parents were Austrian Jews who had settled in Brooklyn. The brothers built the firm on one principle — more toy for less money, sold in volume through the new chain stores — and by the 1950s it was the largest toy manufacturer in the world, making tinplate wind-ups, ride-on tractors, playsets, the Big Wheel and the yo-yo. Louis was the public face, called the Toycoon and the Henry Ford of the toy industry; David was the second name on the incorporation, and the company carried his brother's name rather than both.
