Burton Baskin, born in 1913 in Streator, Illinois, to a Jewish family, ran a Chicago men's shop before the war; in the Navy, in the South Pacific, he took to making ice cream for his fellow sailors with a freezer salvaged from an aircraft carrier. Home again, he opened Burton's Ice Cream in Pasadena, and in 1945 combined forces with his brother-in-law Irv Robbins. The chain that carried both names sold ice cream in thirty-one flavors, one for each day of the month, and was on its way around the world when Baskin died in 1967, at fifty-four.
