Herbert Federer was a mathematician, one of the founders of geometric measure theory, whose 1969 treatise of that title and work on rectifiable sets and currents became foundational for the calculus of variations and the study of minimal surfaces. He spent almost his whole career at Brown University. Born in Vienna, he emigrated to the United States in 1938 fleeing Nazi persecution; he was Jewish.
