Isaak Kikoin was born into a Lithuanian Jewish family in Žagarė. At twenty-five he discovered, with Mikhail Noskov, the photomagnetoelectric effect now named after them. He then directed the Soviet isotope-separation programme, building the gaseous-diffusion plants that produced enriched uranium, and later founded the journal Kvant and the national physics olympiads that shaped generations of Soviet schoolchildren.
