Emmanuel Rashba was a Soviet-American theoretical physicist who made major contributions to condensed matter physics and spintronics. He is best known for the Rashba effect, a spin-orbit coupling in semiconductors that underlies much of modern spintronics, and for predicting electric dipole spin resonance. Rashba was of Jewish origin; he survived the Nazi invasion by fleeing Kyiv and later worked in the Soviet Union and at Harvard University.
