Perelman proved the Poincaré conjecture — one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems — in a series of preprints in 2002–2003, completing Richard Hamilton's Ricci-flow programme and resolving a century-old question in topology. He was awarded the 2006 Fields Medal but declined it, and later turned down the million-dollar Clay Millennium Prize, withdrawing from mathematics. He was born into a Jewish family in Leningrad; his mother, a mathematics teacher, nurtured his early talent.
