Edward Witten is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Mathematical physics and string theory; only physicist to win the Fields Medal
Witten, an American Jew and son of the physicist Louis Witten, turned from an early interest in history and journalism to theoretical physics. Working at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, he reshaped string theory and its links to geometry and topology, and remains the only physicist ever awarded the Fields Medal (1990), for mathematics arising from his physics. He is Jewish.
