Charles Fefferman

A child prodigy from a Jewish family in Washington, Fefferman entered the University of Maryland at fourteen and became a full professor at Chicago at twenty-two, one of the youngest in American history. His deep work in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations and several complex variables — including his study of the Bergman kernel and multiplier problems — earned him the Fields Medal in 1978. His results reshaped how mathematicians understand the fine structure of functions and singularities.
