Biography

Georges Charpak is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; invented the multiwire proportional chamber particle detector, Nobel Prize 1992

How & why

Born to a Polish-Jewish family that moved to France, Charpak joined the Resistance, was arrested, and survived imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp. Working at CERN, he invented the multiwire proportional chamber, a detector that electronically tracks particles thousands of times faster than the photographic methods it replaced. It revolutionized both particle physics and medical imaging, earning him the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics.
