Biography

François Englert is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Theory of the mechanism giving elementary particles mass (Higgs mechanism)

How & why

A Belgian Jew, Englert survived the Holocaust as a hidden child, concealing his identity in orphanages and homes during the German occupation. Working at the Free University of Brussels, in 1964 he and Robert Brout proposed the mechanism by which a background field gives elementary particles their mass — independently of Peter Higgs. When the Higgs boson was confirmed at CERN in 2012, Englert shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics with Higgs.
