Avigdor Kahalani was born in Ness Ziona in 1944 and was conscripted into the Israel Defense Forces in 1962. In the Six-Day War of 1967 he commanded a tank company and was gravely burned when his Patton tank caught fire, for which he received the Medal of Distinguished Service. In October 1973, a lieutenant colonel of twenty-nine commanding the 77th Armoured Battalion of the 7th Brigade, he held the Golan ridge later named the Valley of Tears against a far larger Syrian armoured force, a stand credited with holding the northern front in the opening days of the Yom Kippur War. He was awarded the Medal of Valor, Israel's highest decoration for bravery, retired as a brigadier general in 1992 and sat in the Knesset from 1992 to 1999, serving as Minister of Internal Security from 1996 to 1999.
