Rita Rosani is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Schoolteacher from Trieste and the only Italian woman to die in combat as a partisan; awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour.
Rita Rosani was born in Trieste to a Jewish family whose name had been Rosenzweig before they moved to Italy from Czechoslovakia. She taught in the city's Jewish elementary school, and when the racial laws of 1938 stripped Italian Jews of their rights her family stayed. After the German occupation she joined the partisans in the mountains above Verona and fought with the Eugenio Calò brigade. She was killed in action on Monte Comun on 17 September 1944, at twenty-three — the only Italian woman to fall in combat as a partisan — and was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour, Italy's highest decoration for heroism.
