How & why

Yohanan ben Zakkai was a leading Jewish sage of the first century and a central figure of the Pharisaic tradition. After the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, he secured permission to establish an academy at Yavne (Jamnia), transferring authority from the Temple to the study house and enabling rabbinic Judaism to survive the loss of the sanctuary.
