Elena Kagan's parents were both children of Russian Jewish immigrants; as a girl she pressed her Orthodox rabbi for a bat mitzvah ceremony in the synagogue equal in standing to a boy's, and his congregation's first was held for her. She was the first woman to be Dean of Harvard Law School and the first to be Solicitor General of the United States, and in 2010 became the fourth woman and the eighth Jew appointed to the Supreme Court. She practises Conservative Judaism.
