Arthur Goldberg

Arthur Goldberg was the youngest of eight children of Rebecca and Joseph Goldberg, Orthodox Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, and said the Jewish justices Brandeis and Cardozo had been his models since boyhood. He negotiated the merger that created the AFL-CIO, served as Secretary of Labor and then on the Supreme Court from 1962, where he wrote that the death penalty deserved constitutional re-examination, and resigned to become ambassador to the United Nations, where he drafted Resolution 242 after the Six-Day War. He later led the American Jewish Committee.
