Friedmann was a physicist and mathematician who, in 1922, derived from Einstein's equations the models showing that the universe could be expanding — the Friedmann equations that underpin modern cosmology. He died of typhoid at 37, years before Hubble's observations confirmed cosmic expansion. His father came from a family of Jewish descent that had converted to Orthodox Christianity, and Friedmann himself was baptized as an infant; his Jewish ancestry is thus partial and paternal.
