Alexander Akhiezer was a Soviet and Ukrainian theoretical physicist who made foundational contributions to plasma physics, quantum electrodynamics and the physics of nuclear reactions, and co-authored influential textbooks on plasma electrodynamics. He worked for decades at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, training generations of physicists. He was born into a Jewish family.
