Biography

Richard Feynman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Quantum Electrodynamics

How & why

Raised in a secular Jewish family in New York, Feynman worked on the Manhattan Project and then reformulated quantum electrodynamics, the theory of how light and matter interact. His path-integral approach and the intuitive «Feynman diagrams» tamed the infinities that had blocked the field, matching experiment to extraordinary precision. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics and became one of the most influential teachers and public explainers of physics.
