Biography

Aharon Razin is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Biochemist who helped establish the role of DNA methylation in gene control

How & why

Razin, an Israeli biochemist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, worked with Howard Cedar to establish that DNA methylation controls gene activity, providing a molecular foundation for epigenetics. Through painstaking experiments they showed that methyl tags can switch genes off, a cornerstone of modern understanding of gene regulation. He received the Israel Prize in 2004.
