Wynder was an epidemiologist whose landmark 1950 study with Evarts Graham helped establish the causal link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, and he became a founding figure of modern preventive medicine. He was born into a Jewish family in Germany and fled with his family from Nazi persecution to the United States in 1938.
