Deborah Doniach is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Immunologist who helped establish the concept of organ-specific autoimmune disease.
Born Deborah Abileah to a Jewish family and raised partly in Mandatory Palestine, Doniach settled in London and became a pioneer of clinical immunology. With Ivan Roitt she demonstrated that Hashimoto's thyroiditis is caused by the body's own antibodies attacking the thyroid, helping establish the whole concept of organ-specific autoimmune disease. Her work opened diagnostic autoantibody testing used to this day.
