Biography

Howard Cedar is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Molecular biologist who elucidated the role of DNA methylation in gene regulation

How & why

Born in the United States and trained at MIT and New York University, Cedar settled in Israel at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. With Aharon Razin he showed how DNA methylation — small chemical tags on DNA — switches genes on and off and is inherited through cell division, a cornerstone of epigenetics with deep relevance to cancer.
