How & why

Harris was an American linguist who developed structural and distributional methods of linguistic analysis and founded one of the first university linguistics departments in the United States, at Pennsylvania; his most famous student was Noam Chomsky. Born to a Jewish family in what is now Ukraine, he emigrated as a child and remained a lifelong Zionist active in Jewish causes.
