Bernard Bloch

Bernard Bloch was an American structural linguist and Yale professor, one of the leading figures of the post-Bloomfield descriptivist school, who for two decades edited the field's flagship journal 'Language'. His work on English phonology and on Japanese, and his rigorous methodology, shaped mid-20th-century American linguistics. He is listed among Jewish figures in Jewish biographical compilations; mainstream biographies do not detail his religious background.
