Halle was a Latvian-born American linguist who, with Noam Chomsky, developed generative phonology, most influentially in their 1968 book The Sound Pattern of English, transforming the study of the sound systems of language. He taught for decades at MIT. Born Morris Pinkowitz into a Jewish family, he and his relatives fled the Nazis, emigrating to the United States in 1940.
