Yosef Trumpeldor was born in Pyatigorsk in the Russian Empire in 1880 and lost his left arm at the siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, asking to return to combat and receiving the Cross of St George. During the First World War he and Ze'ev Jabotinsky formed the Zion Mule Corps, in which Trumpeldor served as deputy commander at Gallipoli, one of the first organised Jewish military units in modern times. He settled in the Land of Israel and was killed on 1 March 1920 defending the small settlement of Tel Hai in the Upper Galilee. His reported dying words, understood as 'it is good to die for our country', became a founding phrase of Jewish self-defence; he is buried at Kfar Giladi and the Betar youth movement was named in his memory.
