Yitzhak Sadeh was the founding commander of the Palmach and the teacher of a generation of Israeli commanders. Born in Lublin in 1890, he settled in Mandatory Palestine in 1920 and in 1937 formed the Haganah's mobile field companies, replacing static guard duty with initiative and manoeuvre. He was instrumental in the founding of the Palmach in 1941 and commanded it until 1945, training officers such as Yigal Allon, Moshe Dayan and Yitzhak Rabin. In 1948 he directed the defence of Mishmar HaEmek and established the IDF's first armoured brigade; he died in Tel Aviv in 1952.
