Yigal Allon is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Palmach commander-in-chief and leading general of the 1948 War of Independence
Yigal Allon was one of the founding commanders of Israel's armed forces. Born in Kfar Tavor in 1918, he joined the Haganah as a youth and in 1945 became commander-in-chief of the Palmach, its elite strike force. During the 1948 War of Independence he directed operations on three fronts — Yiftach in the Galilee, Dani in the centre, and Yoav and Horev in the Negev and the south — which secured much of the territory of the new state. He later sat in the Knesset from 1955 until his death and served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education and Foreign Minister.
