Heitler, a German-Jewish physicist who fled Nazi Germany and worked in Britain, Ireland and Switzerland, co-created the quantum theory of the chemical bond. His 1927 Heitler-London theory, with Fritz London, explained the hydrogen molecule using quantum mechanics and founded quantum chemistry. He also wrote a classic text on the quantum theory of radiation.
