Biography

Fritz London is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist known for chemical bonding and London dispersion forces

How & why

Fritz London was a physicist who, with Walter Heitler, gave the first quantum-mechanical account of the covalent chemical bond (1927) and explained the weak intermolecular attraction now called the London dispersion force; he later produced key theories of superconductivity and superfluidity. Born in Breslau to a Jewish family, he was dismissed under Nazi racial laws and emigrated via Britain and France to the United States.
