Biography

Vladimir Vapnik is recognized among Jewish contributors to Technology & Engineering — Co-invented support vector machines and statistical learning theory.

How & why

Vladimir Vapnik is a mathematician and computer scientist who, with Alexey Chervonenkis, founded statistical learning theory (including VC theory) and co-invented the support vector machine, one of the most influential algorithms in machine learning. Born to a Jewish family in the Soviet Union, he later worked at AT&T Bell Labs and Facebook AI Research in the United States. His theory underpins how modern learning systems generalize.
