Jacob Wolfowitz was a Polish-born American mathematician who made fundamental contributions to statistical decision theory, sequential analysis, and information theory, and coined the term 'coding theory'. He emigrated with his family to the United States and taught at Columbia, Cornell, and elsewhere. He was Jewish; his son is the diplomat Paul Wolfowitz.
