Vitka Kempner is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Vilna partisan who carried out the FPO's first sabotage operation and commanded reconnaissance patrols in the forests.
Vitka Kempner was a fighter in the United Partisan Organisation (FPO) in the Vilna Ghetto and one of the few women to carry out combat and sabotage missions in the Jewish resistance. She moved people, messages and ammunition through the ghetto's sewer canals, and carried out the FPO's first sabotage operation, blowing up a German military train outside the city. After the ghetto was liquidated in September 1943 she commanded reconnaissance patrols from the forest, taking part in operations against Vilna's power and water installations over the following months. She later settled in Israel, married Abba Kovner and worked as a clinical psychologist.
