Viktor Korchnoi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — Chess grandmaster, twice World Championship challenger (1978, 1981); of mainly Jewish descent

How & why

Korchnoi was one of the strongest chess grandmasters never to become world champion, twice challenging Anatoly Karpov for the world title (1978 and 1981) after defecting from the Soviet Union in 1976. He was of mainly Jewish descent through his father, and later lived and competed under the Swiss flag.
