How & why

Dawid Janowski was a chess grandmaster who twice challenged world champion Emanuel Lasker for the title (1909–1910) and was celebrated for his aggressive, attacking style, especially with the bishop pair. Born into a Polish Jewish family, he settled in France and was among the leading masters of his era. He died in poverty at a tournament in Hyères.
