Origins and early life
Viktor Adler was born on 24 June 1852 in Prague, into a family of Jewish merchants; the family moved to Vienna in his childhood, and in 1878 he converted to Protestantism — this fiche states it plainly, and the persecutors of the following century would not have recognized that conversion any more than Jewish law does.
Work and career
A physician by training who practiced among the Viennese poor, he turned what he saw into politics. At the Hainfeld congress of 1888-89 he founded and unified the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria and led it for the rest of his life. He built its newspaper, the Arbeiter-Zeitung, made May Day a mass demonstration of Austrian labor, and was one of the driving forces of the campaign that won universal male suffrage in 1907.
Later years
A founding figure of Austromarxism, he became the first foreign secretary of the new German-Austrian state in the last days of the empire, and died in Vienna on 11 November 1918, on the very eve of the proclamation of the republic he had spent his life preparing.
