Biography

Elly Schlein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — First woman to lead Italy's Democratic Party, elected its national secretary in 2023, 'very proudly the daughter of a Jewish father'

How & why

Origins and early life

Elly Schlein was born in Lugano, Switzerland, on 4 May 1985, the daughter of Melvin Schlein, an American political scientist teaching in Switzerland, and of Maria Paola Viviani, an Italian jurist and daughter of the socialist senator Agostino Viviani; her father is Jewish, from an Ashkenazi family that came from Zhovkva, in today's Ukraine, and whose name, Schleyen, was changed to Schlein at Ellis Island. She has described herself as 'very proudly the daughter of a Jewish father', has recalled that her father lived on a kibbutz in the 1960s and that relatives of his were murdered in the Holocaust, and has said as plainly that she is not Jewish by the matrilineal rule or by practice — this fiche records both statements as she made them.

Work and career

She holds Italian, American and Swiss citizenship, studied law at Bologna, volunteered for Barack Obama's campaigns in 2008 and 2012, and entered Italian politics in 2013 with the OccupyPD movement of young Democratic Party members.

Recognition

Elected to the European Parliament in 2014, she left the party in 2015 and returned to it a decade later by a wider door: vice-president of the Emilia-Romagna region from 2020, deputy in 2022, and on 26 February 2023, after winning open primaries against the party establishment's candidate, national secretary of the Partito Democratico — the first woman to lead it, and, as the leader of the largest opposition party, one of the principal figures of Italian politics. She has spoken publicly of being bisexual. This fiche is factual and dated, and will be updated as her career changes.
