Origins and early life
Edvard Brandes was born Carl Edvard Cohen Brandes in Copenhagen on 21 October 1847, into a Jewish merchant family, the younger brother of the critic Georg Brandes; he declared himself an atheist as an adult and kept no tie with Jewish life, which this fiche says plainly, and his origin was thrown at him all his life by his opponents. He studied Oriental languages, took his doctorate on the Indian theatre and translated the Sanskrit dramas of Kalidasa into Danish before turning to literature and politics: his own plays, realist dramas of contemporary life such as Et Besøg of 1884, were performed across Scandinavia, and his novels and criticism made him a leading voice of the Modern Breakthrough that his brother had proclaimed.
Work and career
Elected to the Folketing in 1880, he caused a scandal by stating that he believed in no God, and in 1884 he founded, with Viggo Hørup and Hermann Bing, the newspaper Politiken, the organ of Danish radical liberalism and to this day one of the country's great dailies. He sat in the Landsting from 1906 to 1927 and was twice Minister of Finance, in 1909–1910 and from 1913 to 1920, steering the finances of neutral Denmark through the First World War and the reunification of North Schleswig. He died in Copenhagen on 20 December 1931.
