Ugo Fano was an Italian-American physicist, long at the University of Chicago, whose work in atomic, molecular and radiation physics underpins modern spectroscopy; the asymmetric 'Fano resonance' line shape is named for him. Son of the mathematician Gino Fano, he emigrated to the United States after Italy's 1938 racial laws. He was Jewish.
