Fano was an Italian mathematician who was a pioneer of algebraic geometry; the Fano plane, the smallest finite projective plane, and Fano varieties (higher-dimensional varieties with ample anticanonical bundle) are named after him. Born into a Jewish family, he lost his Turin chair under the 1938 Fascist racial laws and taught in exile in Switzerland.
