How & why

Stewart Resnick was raised in a middle-class Jewish family in New Jersey; his grandfather had emigrated from Ukraine. He started a janitorial company while at UCLA law school and sold it in 1969, then built with his wife Lynda the holding company now called The Wonderful Company — POM Wonderful, FIJI Water, Wonderful Halos, Wonderful Pistachios and Almonds, Teleflora and the JUSTIN and Landmark wineries — and made it the world's largest grower of pistachios and almonds. The Resnicks gave 45 million dollars and ten million in artworks to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for its Resnick Pavilion, and 750 million to Caltech for sustainability research.
