How & why

Martin Sorrell was born in London in 1945 to a Jewish family whose forebears came from Ukraine, Poland and Romania. In 1985 he bought a stake in Wire and Plastic Products, a maker of shopping baskets, and used it as the shell from which he assembled WPP — buying J. Walter Thompson, Ogilvy & Mather and Young & Rubicam to create the largest advertising and communications group in the world. He left in 2018 and immediately built S4 Capital.
