Solomon Isaakovich Pekar was a Soviet theoretical physicist in Kyiv who in 1946 introduced and named the polaron, an electron dressed by the lattice distortion it creates, and later co-introduced the concept of polaritons. These ideas remain central to solid-state and condensed-matter physics; the Landau–Pekar formula bears his name. He was Jewish.
