How & why

Solomon Lefschetz was a Russian-born American mathematician who made foundational contributions to algebraic topology and algebraic geometry, including the Lefschetz fixed-point theorem and the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem. After losing both hands in an industrial accident he became a leading topologist and later a pioneer of the theory of nonlinear differential equations. He was born to a Jewish family and raised in Paris.
